Nelson Cooper Basketball Tournament

This basketball tournament is held during the 3rd week of July and brings together hundreds of young men to shoot basketballs instead of guns. This classic started in 1995 and was first named the National Park League Championships. We changed the name to the Nelson Cooper Peace on da Streets Basketball Classic in 1996. This tournament has become not just one of the most highly anticipated event of the summer but also the largest tournament this side of the Caribbean.

A number of college coaches from the USA use this tournament to scout basketball players. We have received international recognition when our Slam Dunk contest was featured on ESPN.
Nelson Cooper was leader of a gang called the Border Boys. He had given his life to the Lord and went into Mason Addition to encourage another gang, the Mason Murderers, to stop the fighting. Nelson was shot that night and later died.

Nelson had joined our organization, Youth Against Violence. We feel that his courageous efforts needs to live on even if it only reminds our youth that one can be remembered for the good he does for man kind. This is the reason why we named the classic in his honor.
